Padres top the Dodgers

The San Diego Padres started off their 2014 with a win on opening night in Petco Park. Their matchup with the already 2-0 LA Dodgers was a pitches duel early. Andrew Cashner went 6 solid innings giving up only 1 run. The Dodgers started Ryu, Kershaw is out on the DL. He was dominant, blanking the Friars for 7 innings. The Padres rallied in the bottom of the 8th against Brian Wilson, including a Seth Smith blast to gain a 3-1 lead, which was the final score. 26 other teams open on Monday and Houston and NY start it off on Tuesday. Baseball is upon us.

Bold Predictions for 2014

A lot of Baseball blogs have been making "bold" predictions over the last two weeks. Today I will be taking the liberty by giving you Opening Day Bold Predictions.
1. We will have 5 games with first pitch temps under 50 degrees.
I feel like this will be the spring that never comes, while I want Baseball to be played, I don't want frigid conditions. Can we get 60 degrees please?

2. A catastrophic injury will happen.
I feel like if this happens, I will lose all the viewers from that team. But we rarely get big injuries on Opening Day. It has to happen one year right?
3. At least 3 games will have scores where one team scored 10 or more runs.
Did anyone else notice various high scoring contests this Spring Training?

Baseball is in the Air!

Opening Night is tonight with the Dodgers vs Padres on ESPN.
The Dodgers, will have Ryu tow the rubber tonight as Kershaw (the Dodger ace) has been placed on the 15-Day Disabled List retroactive to March 22.
Cashner, will go for the Padres, in what will be his first Opening Day start. No more exhibition folks! It counts now! Tommorow, the bulk of the 30 teams open up. While mostly day games, their should be some exciting match-ups, which I am looking forward to watching. I will be watching the 1:10 Nats vs Mets game, and honestly can't wait!!! Today, I am on my way to my local NY Fairway Market to get ready for tommorow, it's like Baseball's Super Bowl, yet bigger!
Good luck to all of the teams playing on opening day (except the Nats)!

The Best Player in Baseball Signs an Enormous Extension

30 year old first basemen Miguel Cabrera, arguably the best player in the game today, has signed a huge contract extension for 8 years. The deal, which doesn't take effect until after the next 2 seasons when Cabrera's current contract expires, puts him in Detroit until at least 2023. The contract also vesting options for 2024 and '25, both worth $30 million, which would bring the total value of the contract to an astounding $292 million, according to MLB.com. While this long term contract may seem risky for a 30 year old, Cabrera never seems to have a down year, and has not shown any signs of slowing down. He is coming off one of the finest seasons of his career in 2013, hitting a league leading .348 with 44 homers and 137 runs batted in, both second to Baltimore's Chris Davis. And that was only a follow-up to his Triple Crown season of 2012, the first player to accomplish that since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. To this point in his career, Cabrera has 1,995 hits, 365 of them homers, making it certain that big milestones are soon to come. He has been selected to 8 all-star games, won 2 MVP's,  one Triple Crown, has lead his league in homers twice, and has won 3 batting titles.

MLB, MLBPA Agree to Upgrades of Joint Drug Program

After the Biogenesis scandal wrapped up last year, MLB was looking to upgrade its Joint Drug Suspesions. The new laws has a 80 game suspension for a First time offense, 162 Games for 2nd Offense. And a Three Strikes law for the the Third offense where you would be kicked out of Baseball indefinitely.
Also, you can NOT play in the Postseason if you are suspended that year. HDH tests will also be increased throughout the year.
