MLB April Review - 2014
I was reading into the guys a OLBG, and they wrote this interesting article:
A quick look at the standings shows that no team has a Division lead bigger than 2.5 games and declaring a team as running away with a Division is far too bold a statement to make after just 3 weeks.
At the other end of the scale however, it’s possible to list a handful of teams who won’t contend for a postseason place even before the season has started. Take Houston for example. They are in the middle of a rebuilding project that is adding depth and prospects to their minor league system and this is just another season in that process. Any success they have this year is a bonus. No surprises then that they have fallen 7.5 games back in the AL West and have the second worst run differential in baseball.
Over in the National League, each Division has a team that is 5 or more games back. Philadelphia in the East, Chicago Cubs in the Central, and the current worst team in baseball, Arizona in the West. Arizona is perhaps the most surprising of these teams given they finished with 81 wins in 2013 but they have been terrible this season with a league worst minus 48 run differential and an ERA amongst their starting pitchers of 7.50 (a full 2 runs worse than the 29th ranked team). Philadelphia and Houston are also ranked in the bottom 5 in ERA whilst Houston are ranked last in batting average with a dreadful average of .195.
Getting decent odds against any of the above teams is always going to be difficult but at odds of around 4/5 or higher for their opponents, I would be looking to back against them this week. The only exception is when Arizona visit Chicago for a 4 game series against the Cubs (at least one of them will win some games this week!).

Pepper Re-Post ~ Movie Review: 42
The movie "42" starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. Chadwick plays Jackie Robinson, the second African American player in Major League Baseball. Robinson starts the movie playing with the Kansas City Monarchs. Robinson gets visited by a Brooklyn Dodgers scout, informing him that he has been invited to play for the Dodgers. The next thirty minutes focuses on the 1946 Baseball season in which he plays for the Dodgers minor league affiliate in Montréal. The following Spring Training turns out controversial when the Dodgers sign a petition stating they don't want to play with Robinson. As the 1947 season approaches, he gets called by Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), telling him that he has a contact for Jackie to sign. During that year, Jackie's Dodger teammates start to embrace the fact that Jackie is a teammate. Especially Pee Wee Reese (Lucas Black), who tells Robinson in Cincinnati (Reese's hometown), that he is proud to be on the same team with Robinson despite family members calling Reese a disgrace for playing with him. Out of all the racist mini-plots in the movie, the most symbolic one was when Phillies manager Ben Chapman (Alan Tudyk) constantly called Robinson a "nigger" while at bat. His Dodger teammates eventually stick up for Robinson. The movie fashionably ends with Robinson hitting a home run to clinch a NL Pennant for the Dodgers. I give the movie 4.5 out of 5 stars. I praise Harrison Ford's performance as Branch Rickey, he did a phenomenal job.
Rocky Road
The Colorado Rockies have won 8 out of their last 11, and have had some hot hitters lately, no one better than Charlie Blackmon, who is currently batting above 400!! In a hitters ballpark, many question if the Rockies can have an 85-90 win season. 3 Things will have to happen. 1) Carlos Gonzalez must hit 30+ homeruns. 2) Pitching will have to stay strong in Coors Field. 3) Charlie Blackmon needs to bat 290 through the season. If these things can happen, then I expect to see them in top of the Wild Card Standings come Late September

Is Masahiro Tanaka the real deal?
Masahiro Tanaka is a sight for sore eyes. When the Yankees signed him last winter, they clearly weren't expecting what they got. In fact, Tanaka has been so good as of late, that he is an early candidate to start the All Star Game. Tanaka's velocity has been up as of late, and he is showing me that he can pitch in clutch situations. With all the Yankees pitching issues as of late, I wouldn't be surprised if Tanaka becomes the Ace and future Captain.

Baseball BlogKids April 2014
Welcome to a new feature of Pepper! As some of you know I was recently named the “Youth Blogger Outreach Guy” of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance. These kids write some very impressive articles! So, like my chapter president William Tasker from Flagrant Fan does with his “linkfest” , I will be doing a monthly ” BlogKids Whiparound” post! Lets get started:
Devan from Cover Those Bases composed this great post on the latest about Pineda and Pine Tar in Baseball.
Side of Natitude’s own Will has an interesting idea on what to do with the Nats 5th Starter.
Are you an Indians Fan? Well check out The Tribe Bulletin!
BBA’s youngest member, Matt Eisner is previewing the Padres-Nats series!
Matt Nadel covers the 1981 strike in this post

Was Matt Carpenter's extension really worth it?
Pepper Inisder Ben Grieco reported on the Matt Carpenter extension back in March, here's what he said:
Carpenter signs 6-year extension
The St. Louis Cardinals and their third basemen, Matt Carpenter, have agreed to an extension worth $54 million over 6 years. Carpenter is still 4 years away from free agency, and is only 28 years old, but this big extension is worth the gamble. Carpenter is coming off a huge breakout season in 2013 in which he matured into one of the best hitters in baseball, helping lead the Cardinals to the World Series. He made the 1st all star game of his career, and was a catalyst atop St. Louis' lineup, hitting .318 with 11 homers, and drove in 78. He also lead the NL in hits with 199 and doubles with 55. Carpenter also has value with his versatility, as he played solid defense at second base all year long despite being a natural third basemen. But with David Freese gone, Carpenter will move back third base in 2014.While I agree with Ben that it was a fair deal, I Woudnt invest so much into a player with minimal defense and no power. Currently, Matt Carpenter is batting 282, which is fine, but for the price, I just dosent add up. Alas, players earn more these days, I guess I'll just have to go with it!
Pineda suspended
After using Pine tar to get a better grip in a game versus Boston, M.Pineda, Yankees Fifth Starter has been suspended for 10 games. He will likely miss 1 start.

Wrigley Field Celebrates 100
There was something special about today's D-Backs vs Cubs matinee, something old fashioned. Wrigley Field turned 100 Years old today. MLB Stat of the Day says we won't see another ballpark celebrating its centennial until 2062 when Dodger Stadium turns 100, and something tells me the Dodgers will be in a new home by then.
Back to D-Backs vs Cubs, there was something vaugely familiar about the Cubs contest. Ah, an epic collapse that's it, the Cubs had a 3 run lead entering the 9th, but yes they blew it! Regardless, Happy Birthday Wrigley!

Albert Gets 500 Homers
Today in Washington, Albert Pujols launched a bomb to left-center. That particular Homerun happened to be his 500th of his career. Albert started back with the Cardinals in Old Busch Stadium, got a few World Series Rings and headed over to Anaheim, with a nice contract. Despite struggles in his first years in LA, Pujols has has a great beginning to 2014 with 8 homeruns. Congrats Albert, your among a very elite class.

Day at the Game
Well, things have been pretty smooth sailing for the Mets so far this year. After a rough start, the Metzies have turned it around to become one of the best teams in the National League! So far that is.....
I'm 2-0 in the games I've been to. I was at the inaugural Free Shirt Friday versus the Reds, and tonight's Millitary Monday game. So what's my game routine you ask? I have nothing but time to tell you my story. I've been a Mets fan all my life, literally all my life. My second hobby, besides Baseball is Trains, which means that yes, I have never been into the Citi Field Parking Lot. It's the Number (7) train for me! Once we arrive at Citi Field, we hear I nice organ rendition of "Meet The Mets" before heading to the Shake Shack. I'm not going to describe how good Shake Shack is... You'll have to figure it out! After that, it's probably still 30 minutes before game time, which means we go into our fake seats. I don't remember the last Mets game I've been too where I sat in my actual seats. Ok it's time for Alex Anthony (Mets PA) to give us the lineup. Once that's over and done, it's time to keep score, with a PEN. Now if you don't usually take interest in writing a scorecard, it's pretty simple, yet mistakes happen quite frequently. Despite all the "warinings" I always use pen. It's then on to the Acela Club. Seat 202 to be exact. Then it's time for Baseball's laziest mascot, Mr.Met to come out, through one T-Shirt, and go back home. Once the game ends, and (hopefully) Takin' Care of Business is playing, we head back to the <7> express train. Once up the stairs.. I scream at the top of my lungs "Exxxpppres" "Exxxpppres To Manhattan" completely overpowering the other guy. Once on the Subway, I meet some of the regulars.. Keith Olbermann, Random Mets guy who obviously has season tickets, and wears a fitted hat.
I wonder how this routine will change when we start to get more than 30,000 fans... A Mets fan can only dream! #LGM

The Designated Hitter
In 1973, the DH was an experiment. A garbage experiment. It's a rule I could never adapt too. I have been a Mets fan for life, and I've noticed a fatal flaw within this rule. It lacks excitement, there is something that is un-characteristic about the DH rule. At least the DH is optional, which his what I would do if I was a AL manager. Pitchers hitting is apart of the game, point blank. Sure there are some bad hitting pitchers, but there are some mighty good ones. It's always been apart of Baseball. And should always be apart of the NL.

I'm through with the a Catcher rule.
I don't get it. I just don't get it and it's SO frustrating. There's no way the catcher is going to give you a lane. It's too HARD. Within a split second, it's impossible to cover the plate!!! I give this rule 4 more weeks before I rage.
Kids write
As you know, I am a member of the (BBA) Baseball Bloggers Alliance. We have a few other kid reporters that do an excellent job. I was recently named to "look-over" those blogs and support them. My current Chapter President, Flagrant Fan's own William Tasker ( who lives in Caribou, ME by the way {I'll be in Houlton, ME this weekend}), always goes what he calls a "General Linkfest". For blogs that talk about Baseball in General. In the General Linkfest, Tasker talks about his blogs and links to a good post. While I am staying in General, I will be heading a sub-chapter for Bloggers under 17. I will also do something similar to what Tasker does with kids. Once again, if you have never heard of the BBA you can visit its site at baseballbloggersalliance.wordpress.com
I would also like to thank BBA leader Daniel Shoptaw for the opportunity.

Jackie Robinson Day
Jackie Robinson, one of Baseball's most recognizable names, is being honored around the League today, April 15th,to commemorate Jackie Robinson breaking the Baseball color barrier. For the 6th straight year, all MLB players and coaches will wear #42. Unfortunately, there were a lot of rainouts, which mean we will have Two Jackie Robinson Days!

The next Randy Johnson?
Watching west coast baseball seems to have extended downtime. D-Backs long man Mike Bolsinger is truly impressing me. His curveball looks wicked, has a powering fastball and has a commanding presence. Apparently, tonight is his Major League debut, and even though he has gotten into trouble, I remain satisfied. Don't forget to tune into blogtalkradio.com/peppermlb tomorrow at 11:30am for a live feed of the re-launch of MLB Daily.

The value of Giancarlo Stanton
The Marlins, a team that has started relatively good, has sunk into last place. The Marlins have put a lot of the chips in on young players. While Fernandez, Stanton, Ouzuna and Lucas are good young players, the Marlins are going to need some veteran talent. And Salty can not be the lone power source. Trading Stanton could potentially give the Marlins two hitters and a good reliever. However, Stanton is the backbone of the Marlins, and I would stick with him.

Thumbs Down
The newest Baseball injury trend has swept the nation. Broken Thumbs. Already facing injury, Nats 3B'man Ryan Zimmerman broke his right thumb. Ryan will miss 6-8 weeks. So will Halo's Outfielder Josh Hamilton. While a less-scale injury, Yasiel Puig hurt his thumb sliding into First Base last week.

5 Must-Do's at a Baseball game
Going to the game? Here are a couple things to remember!
1. Arrive Early- I love MLB Ballparks. Each one is unique. Don't be the last one in the park. You will rush do do everything and miss the game. Touring the park is fun and all. But come game time. It's all Baseball!
2. Watch the damn game- C'mon guys! Stop looking at your phones during the game. You have the offseason to do that.
3. Get into the spirit- Participate in chants, sing-a-longs, and fan generated screams.
4.The Game will end when the game ends- Baseball dosent have a clock. Stay for extra-innings. (Usually) You wont regret it!
5. Your Up!- Be safe, pay attention and have fun! This is America's Pastime! Live it!
Whats your favorite game routine? Tweet us or comment now!

The Brewers are surprisingly good
The Brew Crew are currently on a 6 game hitting streak. The Brewers rotation is underrated. While The Cardinals are the favorites, the Brewers, Reds and Pirates make the NL Central a very exciting division to watch. Ryan Braun, despite fans displaying their enmity towards Braun, has hit at a good rate. Expect the Brewers to be in the race come September.
Random Thoughts about Baseball
This might just become my favorite Baseball season ever. I like new rules, concepts, and ideas. Instant replay has been a success. The new catchers rule isn't. The Pepper Inbox returns for Saturday's Pepper Show. How can the Catcher rule be improved? What do you envision for Instant Replay? Comment now!

Sorry folks, but no hosts are able to film today's MLB Daily. We will be back tommorow night with recaps and score updates. Here's a link to the some of the scores around MLB right now:https://www.google.com/search?q=mlb+scores&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari
When do standings count?
There is 3 answers to this almost daily question. The more "smart" response is always. The game on September 23rd is just as relevant as the game on May 1st. Yet, the playoff picture dosent form out in May, so I disagree. Many say Memorial Day. I like this response, yet still to early. In my eyes when a last place team can logically still make the playoffs, it's too soon. Lastly, and in my opinion correctly, is the All-Star Break. That is when the Standings begin to crunch for real. If your MLB Team is in last, there is more than plenty of time.

Let's go back in time... The Hammer goes yard
In today's Mets vs Braves game, Hank Arron was given a ceremony to comerorate the Famous Homerun he hit, 40 years ago to date, that made him the Homerun champion. His most famous Homerun, his 715th, gave him baseball immortality.
Baseball World Tour: Japan
The 12 Team NPB League in Japan has recently kicked off. Multiple players from various teams have played in MLB as well. The most famous team, the Giants. Play in the Tokyo Dome or "The Big Egg". To date the Giants have 22 titles in the Japan Series. There are a couple a fundamental differences between the NPB and MLB, such as Ball size, Inning regulations and stadium size. NPB has been recently robbed of their prime stars in recent years, like Yu Darvish and Masahiro Tanaka.

I'm with Murph
As some of you know, Daniel Murphy was criticized for missing Opening Day to spend time with his wife Tori, as she went into labor on Monday morning. Murphy returned to game action against the Nationals today, but not before famous radio shows like "Boomer and Carlton" and "Mike's On!" (Mike Francesa) slammed Murphy for missing two games due to paternity leave. Are they kidding? Any other day in the 365 day calender, the critics are silent. But not on March 31st. It's two days. Two days that in the long run, will be the most important days of your life. Murphy's wife was exhausted, so Murphy took two days off, to take care of 1 day old Noah Murphy. I praise Murphy for defending himself in the situation. It was one of the most pathetic Sports stories in recent history, and I am very happy for Daniel Murphy.
Random Thoughts about Baseball
Alas, another great day in the Baseball world has passed. And so has another Mets loss... On the other hand, today was get-away day, which means Weekday day games, which means lots of empty seats. Tommorow though, we will have a lot of intense Baseball matchups, including Nats vs Braves.
I love it when fans voice their own opinion. How's your favorite team doing? Comment, Tweet or more of that Jazz to me and I will answer your questions in a Pepper Inbox post tommorow!
